Community Service Award: PP Brian Parker has been awarded Brigg Town’s highest accolade and was presented with the Joseph J Magrath award for public voluntary service at the Civic Charity Banquet on 13^th March 2008 at the Kar Restaurant.

Joe Magrath OBE was a prominent, long-serving town clerk to Brigg Urban District Council and later Brigg Town Council. 

The silver rose bowl is awarded to the person who, in the opinion of Brigg Town Council, has contributed most to the wellbeing of the town during 2007 in one or more of the following ways:

Valuable service with an organisation,
Service to the old and infirm,
Service to the youth of the town,Service to the cultural life of the community,
Service within sport and leisure organisations’
Courageous actions,
Actions which have increased the standing of the town.

This community service award is in recognition of Brian’s commitment and support for various charities and voluntary organisations including Rotary. Brian was a founder member of Brigg Town Cricket Club in the early 1970s, a keen player and hard-working secretary/treasurer.
He was also an important member of the business community, through his agricultural business on Westrum Lane.

However, this award is more particularly for his sterling effort to establish the LIVES group that provides first responders in Brigg for those in need of emergency medical help. Through Brian’s efforts the group are now financially sound, well equipped and have recruits in place and in training. Well done Brian and congratulations from all in Rotary, especially Brigg Rotary.

Brigg Rotarians and their wives were on hand at the Leonard Cheshire Home in Barnetby, now rebranded as Leonard Cheshire Disability,  to provide a special meal followed by entertainment when they made their annual home visit.

Some residents have become old friends over the years and others have only been at the home for a short time or are receiving respite care. However, everyone enjoyed their tea washed down with a glass of wine or juice whilst enjoying superb musical and vocal entertainment provided by Brigg Rotary members.

Resident can be seen enjoying their tea with carers supported by Rotarians and their wives.

Every year Rotarians and their partners provide ‘tea and entertainment’ on one occasion and then when the weather hopefully improves in the summer they organise a day out to a venue chosen by the residents.

Last year the chosen place was Skegness which proved an excellent choice given the weather of 2007 with plenty to see, wheelchair friendly facilities and suitable shelter between the rain showers. The day out in 2008 has yet to be finalised but the seaside is always a firm favourite but there must be many local places to visit should this year not live up to global warming predictions and rain again as it did in 2007.
